  Les Mottram - our inspiration

Les Mottram was a senior soccer referee with the Scottish Football Association. As a Grade One referee his ability was recognised by both UEFA and FIFA and he enjoyed many top-level appointments including USA World Cup 1994, Euro Championships 1996 and a Chapions League semi-final. In 1993 however whilst in charge of a game between Partick Thistle and Dundee United he failed to notice that a long-range shot had entered the goal and rebounded off the back stanchion so quickly that it didn’t appear to go in the net. A T.V. slow motion action replay later allowed everyone to become an expert and Les Mottram’s decision was exposed to all critics.

That mistake did not hold Mottram back, he went on to become one of the first truly professional referees when he quit his job as a teacher and joined Japan's J-League as a professional whistle blower.
